When was the last time you learned something new? What resources did you use to help you learn? My goal over the last few weeks was to learn how to properly swing a golf club. Through the use of a variety of technology resources, I gained confidence and have learned a proper swing for the sport of golf.
When I think back on this learning experience the best part was that I never felt that I had failed or was alone in this journey. With a variety of resources, I was able to be successful in completing this task. Through the use of Reddit I was able to see and hear others that were struggling with similar issues that I had as well as tips from individuals who are successful golfers. Looking through Reddit made me feel that I was part of a community with open communication and encouragement during this often frustrating sport. I found YouTube videos to be the most useful to me and what I viewed and went back to most frequently. As I searched through YouTube there was an unlimited amount of resources and seeing golfers swing in action made it easy for me to relate the information and tips to my own golf swing. Social media, specifically Twitter, provided good engagement that was very accessible and convenient to acquire. I followed a golf account and when I would check my own Twitter account I would have golf tips pop up on my newsfeed which included convenient tips. Lastly, I dove into help forums which seemed fitting because I need help learning the proper swing. These forums provided the most information in general. They had all types of golfing information including golf talks, discussing all the rules to golf and booking your next golfing vacation. This experience taught me just how many networks and resources are available today and how digital technology resources can be a great support in learning something new.

Over the past two weeks I have been learning more about 21st century learning. As I unfolded the differing opinions of 21st century learning as well as what a classroom would look like, I was able to think about how these ideas and discussions can relate to me specifically as a teacher and how I can provide this type of learning to my students. Rachel Samuel's stated, "the 21st century is not the future; it is now. We must adapt our classrooms to the times we live in, to prepare our students for the world they will encounter when they graduate and enter the workforce."
Thanks to the great Michigan weather in the last few weeks I have been able to get outside and practice my golf swing. Since my last post I have immersed myself in a variety of resources to support my learning but there have been a few resources in particular that have helped me out. In general, I am a very visual learner therefore watching videos of other golfers has seemed to be most useful. This past week I dove into 21st Century Learning and the evolution it’s making for the world of education. As I continue to educate the youth it’s important that I am staying up with times and aware of these changes. My time exploring the findings of this century's learnings as well as the controversy were very enlightening.
PLN stands for Personal Learning Network. Common Sense Education (2017) states that a PLN is "any network you create to learn from and share ideas with others" (0:11). I wouldn't be the successful teacher that I am without the "team" who is supporting me and cheering me on each day. Now you may automatically think that this team includes my current building co-workers, but after taking a step back and thinking about my educational career I realized that the guidance comes from a variety of different people and groups in my life. As I personalized my own PLN I was able to see how lucky I am to have the support system and team to be there for me as an educator. From the school district I currently work for, my family, social media and Michigan State University, I have a network.
I have recently picked up the sport of golf and have been actively working on perfecting my swing. I'm not sure what took me so long to pick up a club and play but due to the stay at home orders as well as recently moving to a house on the golf course I thought, what a great time to immerse myself in this sport. As I begin to dive into a variety of digital technology resources including videos, help forums, affinity spaces which includes places where learning happens and social media I have began to learn more about the basic techniques to swinging a golf club.
What's TPACK? TPACK stands for Technological Pedagogy Content Knowledge. After watching, TPACK in 2 Minutes, I was able simplify these big ideas. To start there's the content knowledge. Robertson stated, “it’s the what, it’s the subject matter we are teaching” (2013). This includes subjects such as opinion based writing or learning how to read a map. Next is the pedagogical knowledge, she stated “it’s the how” (2013). As a teacher how are you presenting this information to your students, think about what approach will create the most success. Lastly, is technology, “it’s the partner” (Robertson, 2013). It's important to choose a technology piece that helps support your students and the specific content area they are learning. When you piece these three ideas together you can see they go hand in hand, the TPACK comes in where all three overlap and work together.
Have you ever mastered something, whether it is a game, sport, lesson, hobby or instrument? Have you taken a step back to think about the process of what led you to mastering it? I played collegiate lacrosse and after taking a step back to think about the process and the driving forces it became clear to me what led me to put time into the sport and motivated me to excel. I recently read chapter one through three of the book, Bransford, Browns and Cocking's (2000) How People Learn, these chapters help to highlight how one can lead to mastery through learning, understanding and conceptual change.
