This week I focused on learning more about students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). After completing a year of student teaching as well as my first year of teaching I have had experience working with students who have this disorder. Through my own experiences these students typically had a hard time staying focused and completing their work in a timely manner. As a second grade teacher, to better support my future students with ADHD, I can provide technology as a tool to prevent the lack of focus, provide more productivity with their time and to keep them learning and engaged for longer periods of time. After completing some research through reading the, Journal of School Psychology, I learned more information about students with ADHD and specific measures and data about this disorder. The journal states that "the behavioral symptoms (i.e., inattention, impulsivity and overactivity) of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are associated with concurrent and later academic underachievement" (DePaul et al, 2004). DePaul goes on to discuss the "notable differences in the prediction of reading achievement between children with AD/HD and their peers" (DePaul et al, 2004). With this information I can enlighten myself with better ways to support reading achievement in my classroom for students with this inattention or overactivity, specifically technology tools that can promote success. Overall, there are a variety of tools that can support the attention span and focus of students with ADHD. Spelling City is a great resource that can provide useful instruction for a variety of students in the classroom and I look forward to implementing this resources in my own classroom. Take a look at my screencast below as I provide more information about my research and about what Spelling City has to offer! Resources:
