This past week I dove into many ideas and resources that revolved around learning, failing and making. Many of my current educational thoughts were challenged and as an educator I thought about how my findings can support my future teachings and influence the second graders in my classroom. I believe that we are all life long learners and as we continue on through life we will continue to learn, fail and make as people and educators. One video that stuck with me and I have encouraged educators in my family as well as coworkers to take the time to watch is, RSA ANIMATE: Changing Education Paradigms. RSA Animate challenges the idea of "how do we educate our children to take their place in the economies of the 21st century?" (2010). They believe that the education system today is, "trying to meet the future with what they did in the past" (The RSA, 2010). The video emphasizes the idea of moving away from standardized tests, which many may agree or disagree with but they go on to say that "our children are living in the most intensely stimulating period in the history of the earth" (The RSA, 2010). This video puts an emphasis on the high expectations we have for students and challenges that idea that our education system may not be taking all the right avenues to lead our youth to be the most successful in the future. I also explored ideas around failure as I reflected on a past failures of my own, specifically the time that I was cut from my high school's JV volleyball team. As hard as this experience was, I am grateful for it because it taught me that when one door closes another one opens. As I have just wrapped up my first year of teaching, failure has been more apparent in my life over the last year. Going forward with my teaching, I want to emphasize this idea that failure is bound to happen and that is ok. I can provide my students with these experiences and walk them through the feelings and frustrations that may come but also celebrate and cheer them on as they overcome their failures. After watching the video, Reframing Failure as Iteration Allows Students to Thrive, it provides a real life classroom lesson that helps to teach these students the importance of failure. One students in particular stated, "failure is really bad. But I guess if you have a good attitude then you can always make it what you want it to be and not get frustrated" (Edutopia, 2013). While another student stated, "if you fail, just try again" (Edutopia, 2013). The teacher emphasizes these ideas to her students and helps to shape their emotions and feeling while encouraging them to continue to preserver and work through the challenges of this lesson. Lastly, I want to touch on the idea of exploring making which was helpful through watching the video, What Is a Maker?. This video states that, "making is so basic and fundamental to who we are, that all of us are makers, it's not just some special group who went to the right school, it's something that is in all of us." (Make:, 2016). I found this video to be very inspirational as well as motivate educators to express these ideas to students. It can be important for educators to encourage and excite them and ourselves for the possibilities we have as makers. Overall, our education system is evolving but so are we as individuals. It is important to use our experience, knowledge and those around us to help to better ourselves and continue to grow. Everyday is a fresh start, use those failures to drive your motivation and continue to strive to be better each day. Take a look at the infographic that I made, this image can help summarize ways that I can better support my students and provide the best instruction for future second graders! Resources:
